About Poisons

Who has never experienced any of these feelings – anger, sorrow, love, hate, fear, desire, joy…? It is not abnormal to feel it, as it is in our nature. However, it could be out of your normal realm if you have an over abundance of each, and it becomes… poisons. The performance Poisons makes use of liquid form such as H20, chemicals and bubbles to create a theatrical landscape of human complexity imprisoned in the confinement of poisons.

Segments of Poisons

1. Prologue
A team of personnel in office attire enters and is swirled into the realm of Poisons.

2. Desires
Beneath the neatly attired shells are the unsettled and boiling desires of yearning
souls. The mess beneath the control; the chaos beneath the order…

3. Love
Memories of children enter. Face to face, breath to breath, heart to heart…
Colorful bubbles of fill the space with love.

4. Fear
Joyful moments could only last that long. Fears set in when crisis sets in, gradually
and then suddenly… They start to become passive aggressive.

5. Hate/Anger
When passive aggressive turns into full-fledged aggressiveness, they pull, push,
and fight. At one point, they are exhausted, and a hysterical laugh fills the space…

6. Sorrow
The bodies are drenched; the souls are soiled. They can hardly hold themselves
straight. They sing a song of sorrow, and then a song of prayer, hoping to seek
salvation.

7. Joy
What is the body like when it is free of burdens and when it moves in its own
natural rhythm? A joyful body.

8. Epilogue (The Singing Soul)
The bodies are emptied of poisons, and turn into singing bodies. It rings with
melodious tunes… eternally.

3rd-6th October 2007 in Lublin

12th ‘Theatre Confrontations’ International Festival

The festival has been recognized as the most remarkable cultural event in Eastern Europe & one of the biggest in Poland.

“Mandala in its full version, with three performers, focuses on the drawing for a 3-meter-wide rice mandala as two dancers mime the various stages of birth, childhood, and maturity. The sequence and the use of the mandala are based to some extent on Jung’s understanding of the formation and transformation of the personality. So this is an intellectually eclectic, and quite challenging piece: but its immediate theatrical effect derives, for me at least, from the astonishing dance skills and polished athleticism of the players, put to the service of articulating sequences of intense–sometimes erotic, sometimes painful, sometimes joyful–human emotion.”

- Prof Thomas R. Whitaker, an emeritus Professor of English from Yale University

“Using the mandala as a concrete symbol of meditation was effective, so much that the abrupt scattering of this intricate pattern of sand at the end felt almost heartwrenching… The performers clambered into three large urns filled with water. They emerged, backs to the audience, revealing half of their naked torsos… tantalizing synchronized movements of hands and hips reminiscent of a more traditional mode of dance, yielding a visual image that was simultaneously serenely pure and joyously carnal.”

- Hong Xinyi, The Straits Times theatre critic.

“When the performers stripped off their costumes, what we saw was bodies which were eroded by the urban life… after a ritual of purification, these deteriorated bodies suddenly turned alive…. ”
